We investigated ten natural black poplar (Populus nigra) populations from Western Europe to assess the role of epigenetic regulation in driving tree species evolution and adaptation, from macro-evolutionary timescales (polyploidization events) to micro-evolutionary timescales (population differentiation). Results highlight DNA methylation as a marker of population differentiation and evolutionary adaptation in woody plants.
